Huit Jours a Trébaumec. Journal de Vacances Orné.
HUGNET, Georges. Huit Jours a Trébaumec. Journal de Vacances Orné. 82 photo-collages by Hugnet. Folio, 390 x 180 mm., original illustrated wrappers in grey cloth slipcase. Paris: Mercher, 1969.
Presented as a spoof of a Michelin Guide, this is a marvelous display of Hugnet's wit as a collagist. The book is a Surrealist masterpiece, published by Henri Mercher, the renowned bookbinder. The book appears as a Guide Rose Micheline, a parody of the Guide Michelin Rouge. In 1947, Hugnet traveled along the coast of Brittany taking photographs. Inspired by his travels he combined earlier collages with newly made ones and selected 82 collages to create a Surrealist drama with accompanying handwritten text. The collages depict humorous, racy and grotesque situations in and around Trébaumec, a word play on "good looking guy." The edition was limited to 100 numbered copies, signed by Hugnet and Mercher, and 5 lettered copies, of which this is C, with 82 original photographs. Accompanied by the prospectus. A fine copy.
