This print shows the Ludovisi Gardens in Rome in the 17th Century. They were built on the site of the famous ancient Roman gardens belonging to Sallust and survived until 1885, when they were cleared to build housing.

The obelisk came to Rome from Aswan, Egypt in the reign of Hadrian, who had it placed in the Sallustian Gardens. Known as the Sallustian Obelisk, each of its four sides are shown here, as well as images of how it must have looked before and after it was re-erected in the Renaissance. It now stands in front of Trinita dei Monti at the top of the Spanish Steps.
