Erich F. Schmidt, an archaeologist, directed the Aerial Survey of the Oriental Institute. The 1935/6 season survey concentrated on southern Iran and the 1937 survey focused on the Gurgan plain in northeastern Iran, northwestern sites including Tabriz and Mount Ararat, and the Persepolis plain. Theses aerial photographs allowed for the identification of hundreds of sites, such as over 400 around Persepolis, which would have taken years to map on the ground.
