Canadian-born painter Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002), one of the major figures of abstract painting in the second half of the 20th century, abandoned the paintbrush for the palette knife very early on. Although the artist constantly reinvented himself throughout his prolific career, his oil painting technique always relied on three fundamental elements: volume, color-the first playing as important a role as the second-and the degree of gloss, achieved by juxtaposing matte and glossy paint, thus creating areas that reflect light in different ways.
This work, the sixth volume of the catalogue raisonné of Riopelle's works, is devoted to the period 1980-1985 and includes oils on canvas and on wood, and works on paper.
