The French Fuchsine monopoly forced several French chemists to move to Switzerland around 1862 to pursue their quest for developing their own formulas for dyestuffs. In 1884, one of those emigres, Alexander Chavel, founded Ciba. Ciba would eventually go on to be part of what is today Novartis.
