PIET MONDRIAN: Life and Work

De Jong, Cees W. PIET MONDRIAN: Life and Work. 392 pages, including 233 color and 1,103 b&w plates. 4to, cloth. New York, Harry Abrams, 2015.

A beautifully illustrated new monograph on Mondrian, tracing his career from his earliest traditional painting (Dead Hare, 1891) to the last unfinished Victory Boogie Woogie of 1944. His work before 1912, when he moved to Paris, is a revelation of color and atmosphere. The flower paintings are well-known, but this book also includes his seascapes, landscapes, windmills, and portraits. The influence of cubism and de Stijl will follow, and from 1913 on the grids that he is so well known for begin to appear. A fascinating and substantial study, with archival photographs and a section of thumbnail black and white images of all the known paintings (without provenance or exhibition histories).
