HENRI MATISSE: The Cut-Outs

Buchberg, Karl et al (eds). HENRI MATISSE: The Cut-Outs. 256 pages, including 250 color plates. 4to, cloth. New York, Museum of Modern Art, 2014.

Filled with fascinating and rarely seen archival photos, this extensively illustrated catalogue for the upcoming MoMA show (10/25/14 - 2/ 8/15) presents a complete reconsideration of the cut-outs and their place in Matisse's career. A central chapter ("In the Studio") presents a photo essay of the three studios that Matisse worked in during the 40s and 50s, allowing for a glimpse into the migration and metamorphosis of images from one place to the other. Three short essays make up the introduction, followed by six more focused essays, and three gatefolds (including a 4-page gatefold of The Swimming Pool). Color images are a prominent feature of all the essays.
