The Prints of ELLSWORTH KELLY: A Catalogue Raisonné

Axsom, Richard H. The Prints of ELLSWORTH KELLY: A Catalogue Raisonné. Two volumes with 866 pages, including 330 color plates. 4to, cloth, linen covered slipcase. Portland, Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, 2012.

This second edition of the catalogue raisonné of Ellsworth Kelly's prints, as noted in the author's preface, took on a life of it's own and became not just an update of the first edition (1987), but a new book. It covers the period from 1945 to 2008, includes an additional 117 new editions, the original essay has been revised, and a new essay follows the continuing history of Kelly's prints after 1987. Most of the works in the first edition's Appendix (posters, exhibition covers, ephemera) have been removed, the artist and author considering that these objects deserve their own publication. Information in the first edition has been updated, along with a revised and streamlined format for the documentation of the prints themselves. It is a beautifully produced book, long in the making, and will become the essential reference for Kelly's substantial body of print work.
