Color Harmonies and Pigments

HILER, Hilaire. Color Harmonies and Pigments. [x], 61, [1] pp. Illustrated with one colour plate and an inserted colour wheel. Folio, 350 x 270 mm, bound in publisher's white linen printed in maroon on front cover and spine, in the worn original cardboard slipcase. Los Angeles: Research Publishing Company, 1942.

First Edition of this artist's manual on colour by well-known American painter and scholar Hilaire Hiler (1898-1966). In his introduction, Hiler discusses the current trends in colour theory and asserts his own aesthetic perspective: "Over-scientific approach has too often put color into a straight jacket," whereas the author's point of view is psychological, not physical. Accompanied by a colour wheel and an excellent bibliography.

Birren 325. Yale Library Gazette, July l974, p. 38. Kuehni and Schwarz, p. 262.
