This publication couples Henry James's story, inspired by a small figurine of a monkey and a cat in human clothes, with a series of 18 photogravures by Jim Dine, likewise inspired by the same figurine, which by a coincidence the artist had found in a London antique shop. The first volume, containing the James story, contains an introduction by Arthur C. Danto, one photogravure illustration by Dine and one tipped-in photograph. The remaining photogravure illustrations, bound accordion style in a separate volume, depict a tragic love story between Dione's clay maquettes of the anthropomorphic cat and monkey. Printed in Monotype and handset Times New Roman on German Hahnemühle Biblio paper. One of 26 lettered copies printed hors de commerce, from a total of 201 copies, autographed by artist.
