LEFALLE-COLLINS, LIZETTA et al. In the Spirit of Resistance: African-American Modernists & The Mexican Muralist School. 192 pp., 114 plates, most of which are in colour, and 20 b&w figures. Text in English and Spanish. Square 4to, wraps. New York, American Federation of Arts, 1996.
Mexican artists Orozco, Rivera and Siquieros were masters at using the mural as a political tool, a fact that impressed a younger generation of African-American modernists including Charles Alston, Elizabeth Catlett, Charles White and others. This volume closely examines the relationship between the Mexican muralists and the work later produced by these African Americans. The text highlights both the aesthetic influences of the Mexican artists and the political similarities of the two groups. Text in English and Spanish.
