Although recognized chiefly for his role as a teacher of leading Impressionists, Charles Gleyre eventually came to be known as the most eminient Swiss painter between Fuseli and Hodler. Drawing on recently discovered material, this study offers a detailed account of his life and work, and is the first catalogue raisonné to be published on him.
