Kachestvennaya Stal' SSSR
TELINGATER, Solomon. Kachestvennaya Stal' SSSR. [The Quality Steel of the USSR]. 164 pp. Illustrated throughout with photographs, photomontage, graphs, charts etc., 30 of which are full page some folding. Small folio, 250 x 180 mm, bound in publisher's etched steel covers. Housed in archival red box. Moscow-Leningrad: Glavnaia redaktsiia lit-ry po chernoi metallurgii, 1935.
One of the rare copies of Telingater's The Quality Steel of the USSR bound in steel. Along with the steel binding, the frontispiece consists of a thin sheet of stainless steel between 2 sheets of heavy stock, in each of which has been cut a silhouette of Stalin's head in profile. The silhouette thus appears on both recto and verso, on the recto over a printed graph of rising steel production.
'In terms of content The Quality Steel is an industrial publication, but- despite the predominance of text and the small format, the steel cover and frontispiece - thirty pages of illustrations, photographs, photomontages and drawings make it less a piece of technical literature than a work of art, an artefact.' (Karasik & Heiting, The Soviet Photobook)
A fine, deluxe copy, of this exceedingly rare example of the best in Soviet book design.
