Essai sur les Jardins.

WATELET, Claude-Henri. Essai sur les Jardins. [4], 160, [4] pp. Illustrated with 15 ornamental woodcuts throughout. 8vo., 218 x 140 mm, full contemporary red morocco. Paris: Prault, etc., 1774.

First Edition of this rare treatise on character and taste in gardens by the French painter Watelet (1718-1786). Watelet was a close friend of Francois Boucher and Hubert Robert, both contemporary French painters who shared Watelets' interest in gardens. Watelet was also acquainted with J.J. Rousseau, and the ideas expressed Essai sur les Jardins in are certainly infused with Rousseauesque sentiments of simplicity and naturalness. There are chapters on country estates, ferme ornée (ornamental hedgerows), old and modern parks, flowers, rocks, trees, water, spaces, and poetic, romantic, pleasure and picturesque gardens.

Very fine copy. Not in Lindley Library Catalogue, Brunet, Hunt, Graesse, Plesch, Olschki, Cioranescu.
