Govan, Michael. JAMES TURRELL: A Retrospective. 303 pages, including 250 color plates. 4to, cloth. New York, Prestel in association with Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2013.
There isn't another in-print book on James Turrell that rivals this one. Given the near impossibility of a reprint of the catalogue raisonné, this book comes closest to capturing the full spectrum of his career. Although the heavy paper does not convey the luminosity of the works, it does capture another aspect of them, the saturation of color. The book has a heft that far exceeds its pagination.
There are nine chapters that make up the text, plus a foreword and two essays, one of which transcribes a conversation with the artist in 2012. This is the "worth the price of admission" section of the book; it's Turrell's voice, and it's fascinating.
