Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) came from a family of professional flower painters who enjoyed considerable success in Holland as "interior decorators," producing flowerpieces, overdoors, overmantles, etc. This print conveys the temperment of a painter rather than that of a botanical illustrator. "In his concern to depict the essence of a beautiful floral arrangement, Van Huysum did not always select flowers of the same season for his bouquets" (Pierpont Morgan Library, Flowers in Books and Drawings 92-3).
