BEAUMONT, Roberts. Colour in Woven Design. With 32 coloured plates and numerous original illustrations. 8vo., 185 x 120 mm, bound in publisher's blue cloth with gilt emblem on front cover and title gilt on spine. London: Whittaker & Co, 1890.
First Edition of this standard work on colour in textiles. The author felt that predecessors such as Chevreul, Rood, and Benson were useful from a scientific point of view but less so as far as being of help to students of applied design, thus he set out to write this work. The book claims to be "the first treatise published professing to treat exclusively of the colouring of woven styles." The colour plates are unusual and are noted in the preface: "It need scarcely be observed that the coloured illustrations are unique, being exact representations of the woven textures." They are in fact colour halftones of close-up photographs of woven textiles showing the colours and textures.
