First Edition. Cruikshank's Table Book contains the first appearance of an early Thackeray novella, entitled Legend of the Rhine, with other contributions by Mark Lemon, Horace Mayhew, A.B. Reach, Shirley Brooks, &c. The editor of the Table Book was Gilbert Abbot A'Beckett (1811-1856), the comic writer who was one of the original staff members of Punch. Light stains on back cover, spine slightly sunned, glue residue in the gutter between the plate "Annual Emigration of Birds" and page 165. Bookplates of John Nolty and John Francis Neylan on front paste-down and fly-leaf. A near fine copy.
