Burgard, Timothy Anglin. RICHARD DIEBENKORN: The Berkeley Years, 1953-1966. 255 pages, including 150 color plates. 4to, boards. New Haven, Yale University Press, 2013.
The plates in this book have an immediate visual impact, and it's not entirely clear why until you look carefully at the trim size; it's slightly larger than normal. Most of the images are full page, and the color just leaps up.
This catalogue for a show that starts in June in San Franciso covers the 13 years Diebenkorn lived in Berkeley, a time in his career when he worked both abstractly and, after 1955, figuratively. There are three shortish essays that read coherently and intelligently, a cache of unpublished drawings and photographs, and a year-by-year chronology.
