HAREUX, Ernest. Le mélange des couleurs enseigné par l'exemple. Leçons données sur les fac-similés des oeuvres et des palettes. Illustrated with 14 colour plates printed by Engelmann in Paris. Folio, 304 x 230 mm, bound loose as issued in publisher's portfolio of blue cloth-backed printed boards with ties. Paris: Librairie Renouard, .
An oil painter's manual from the series Premières études de peinture a l'huile, edited by H. Laurens. The "études" examine orange, blue, yellow, violet, red, green, and white, respectively, illustrated with colour palettes and a variety of paintings by the author. Each chapter concludes with notes on colour composition for an audience of artists rather than scientists: the ingredients are named but no precise measurement is given, leaving the mélange to the individual. Ernest Victor Hareux (1847-1909) was a successful painter best known for his landscapes. Some foxing to text, still the plates in very good condition.
