Jollet, Etienne. JEAN & FRANCOIS CLOUET. 320 pp., with roughly 200 illustrations in color and b&w. 4to, cloth. Paris, Editions de la Lagune, 1997.
Jean Clouet (1485?-1541) and his son François (1515?-1572) were celebrated portrait painters of royalty, working under François 1er (Jean), Henri II, François II and Charles IX (François). Although only a dozen confirmed paintings have been attributed to them, their drawings were conserved in large numbers. This monograph, by a conservator at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, presents a scholarly and well-informed analysis of their oeuvre. Text in French.
