STEREO-TRAVEL CO. Palestine. Illustrated with 100 stereo-graphic views on stiff cardboard with printed captions. Housed in original red cloth box mimicking two volumes, spines lettered in gilt. [Corona, NY]: Stereo-Travel Co, 1908.
This scarce travel album offers 100 stereoviews of Palestine and surrounding areas showing cities, towns and villages; daily life and occupations in urban and agricultural settings; prominent monuments and landmarks; and archaeological sites and ancient buildings. Cities featured include Haifa, Baalbek (Syria), Hebron, Gaza, Acre, Bethany, Damascus and Jerusalem. Plethora of various Biblical (both Old & New Testament) sites are featured including Jacob's well, Garden of Gethsemane, Wailing Place, the Sixth Station on the Via Dolorosa, Tomb of the Kings, Shiloh the resting place of the Ark, Rachel's tomb, etc.
Apart from the numerous Biblical sites are views of daily life - a third-class rail car, market scenes, private homes, a mosque, a wedding procession, a Bedouin chief, herders of various animals and a view of a group of lepers (all women). The Stereo Travel Company was a small company on Long Island, NY, that produced mostly boxed sets. They were a 'late' stereoview publisher, issuing the majority of their views after 1905. Although their principle output was of American views, they also ventured abroad as here. Stereoviews in fine condition, some minor wear to "spine" of box. Accompanied by a viewer.
