WHARTON, Edith

WHARTON, Edith. French Ways and Their Meanings. 149 pp. 8vo., bound in original green pictorial cloth, in rare publisher's pictorial paper box. Laid in green half-morocco protective case. New York and London: D. Appleton, 1919.

First Edition, First Issue, of this collection of essays, written from a Francophile's perspective during WWI, which includes Wharton's very perceptive "The New Frenchwoman." A beautiful copy in the original illustrated box which is so rare that it was only known to Wharton's bibliographer through publisher's records; the box itself remained "unlocated." A dust-wrapper was not issued with book until the 1927 edition. This is one of only four books by Wharton that concerned WWI, the others being Fighting France (1915), The Marne (1918), and A Son at the Front (1923). Box with minor wear to corners, one side panel repaired; overall an outstanding copy.
