Paolucci, Antonio, B. Santi and J. Beck. MICHELANGELO: The Medici Chapel. 213 pp., 201 tritone illustrations. Folio, cloth. New York, Thames & Hudson.
The Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo in Florence was commissioned by Pope Leo X to commemorate his relatives, Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici. It has recently been restored. Michelangelo worked on both the design and execution of the chapel over many years, and was never entirely completed. This book captures in photographs (often in close-up) the shades, nuances, and glories of the work he did for the Chapel, including the tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano, the statues of Dawn and Dusk, Night and Day. Accompanying text by Renaissance scholar Antonio Paolucci and others offers a history of the project and a discussion of Michelangelo's role as sculptor and architect.
