Though still little known outside central Europe, Lovis Corinth is, with Beckmann and Kokoschka, one of the foremost figurative painters of the twentieth century. His worked emerged from the realist tradition of the 1880's but he soon joined the vanguard and developed a style that has often been called expressionist, but in fact, he defies art historical classification.
