This volume accompanies an exhibition of John Singleton Copley's work organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Copley, one of the leading portraitists of the colonial era, worked in Boston until he moved to London in 1774. The focus of this exhibition is on the paintings, miniatures, and pastels Copley produced before 1774; 81 colorplates are accompanied by critical and historical commentary. Four main essays and several shorter texts place his works in their historical and social context and reevaluate his influence on pre-Revolutionary culture. Announced for September.
