EL LISSITZKY. Wendingen. Volume 4, Number 11. Edited by Th. Wijdeveld. Introduction by Dr. H.P. Berlage. 38 pp. With 22 illustrations of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. Square folio, 330 x 330 mm, bound in original colour-printed wrappers. Preserved in cloth box. Amsterdam: Uitgevers-maatschappij de Hooge Brug, November 1922.
The special number of the periodical Wendingen devoted to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. This volume is highly sought-after for the illustrated cover which bears one of Lissitzky's most frequently reproduced images, printed in lithograph and letterpress: the cover design resembles his Prouns of the same time period.
Wendingen, published between 1918 and 1931, offered the first major European record of Wright's work after the 1910-11 German volumes of Wasmuth. There are five essays by European architects, two by Louis Sullivan, and four by Wright himself. The illustrations cover work done by Wright between 1902 and 1923, including: a summer garden in America, a country house, shops, residences, cinema, a theater in Los Angeles, and the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Issued in ca. 1400 copies. In fine condition.
